The Ming dynasty was established by Zhu Yuanzhang, also known as Hongwu Emperor, who declared the founding of the dynasty in 1368. The name "Ming" means "bright" or "clear," symbolizing the bright future that Zhu envisioned for his people.

Zhu Yuanzhang was born into a peasant family in Anhui Province. His early life was marked by poverty and hardship, but he eventually entered a Buddhist monastery where he gained an education and developed leadership skills. He joined the Red Turban Rebellion against the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty and rose through its ranks to become one of its leaders.

In 1356, Zhu led his troops to victory over the rival forces led by Chen Youliang, establishing himself as a powerful military leader. In 1367, he declared himself King of Wu and launched a campaign to drive out foreign invaders from China.

In 1368, after defeating Zhang Shicheng's army at Lake Poyang, Zhu captured Nanjing (then called Jiangning) from Wang Weiyi's forces on March 19th. He then proclaimed himself emperor with capital at Nanjing on May 9th.

During his reign as Hongwu Emperor (ruling until his death in 1398), Zhu implemented policies aimed at centralizing power and promoting agriculture while suppressing corruption among officials. He also ordered mass executions for perceived enemies within China during this time period.

Afterward successive rulers continued these policies throughout their reigns:

1.) Jianwen Emperor (1402-1402): A brief reign between two other emperors.

2.) Yongle Emperor (1425-1435): Established Beijing as capital city; sent Admiral Zheng He on several voyages across Asia.

3.) Hongxi Emperor (1425): Very short-lived ruler who died soon after ascending to throne.
