Founding and Consolidation (1368-1424)
The Ming dynasty was founded by Zhu Yuanzhang, a former Buddhist monk who rose from poverty to become the Emperor Hongwu. He established his capital in Nanjing and sought to consolidate power by eliminating rival factions and establishing a centralized government. During this period, he also standardized weights, measures, currency, and writing systems across the country.
Expansion and Exploration (1425-1521)
The early years of the Ming saw significant expansion under Emperors Yongle and Xuande. They dispatched Admiral Zheng He on seven maritime expeditions that reached as far as Southeast Asia, India, Africa, and possibly even the Americas. These voyages were not only for trade but also for spreading Chinese culture.
Decline (1522-1644)
As time passed, corruption within the bureaucracy increased significantly during the late Ming era. The emperors became more isolated from reality while officials used their positions for personal gain instead of serving their duties diligently. This led to weakened central authority which made it difficult for China to defend against foreign invasions like those from Manchu-led Qing forces.
